There have been many wonderful concerts under the banner of "Live From Lincoln Center" over the years and this one was a stunner. These two great voices heard in concert a dozen years ago are well worth preserving on DVD. The first half of the program is pretty much a routine, though very enjoyable, concert of arias and duets. It is the second half of the program, however, which becomes truly magical. Four major scenes from Eugen Onegin were presented by the singers who were joined by actress Frances Sternhagen who gives a delightful and moving performance of the "elderly Tatiana." The narrative thread is well written and the singers perform the semi-staged scenes with the intensity that the scenes call for. The Orchestra of St. Luke's under Mark Elder opened the concert with the overture to Ruslan and Ludmilla, and played wonderfully throughout.

This is from a PBS concert which I highly recommend. Orchestra is St. Luke's, conductor is fine, & singing is wonderful. I especially enjoyed the parts of Tchaikovky's Eugene Onegin in the 2nd half of concert - along with a well-known actress explaining the plot which is from Pushkin's verse/novel. Good stuff!!!
