DVD 5140 FAUST (Gounod)

This is a very good disk with an excellent cast. However the ballet and the walpurgis night scene are omitted. Also it would have been helpful if the credits had been included. The production is traditional. although I didn't care for the costumes. but basically it followed Gounod's intentions very well

The intensity and intimacy of the performance is unique, especially these days when badly filmed new productions dominate. Alfredo Kraus is one of the greatest Fausts you will ever hear, Freni is tragically vulnerable, Ghiaurov"s Mephistopheles is captured in all its unctuous malevolence. Sound is excellent. The broadcast presented the opera uncut:— I have no idea how the DVD looks, but I assume it is a copy of the broadcast.
