The singing in this performance is the stuff of legend. Opolais and Kaufmann were brilliant. Flawless would be an understatement. In fact the entire cast as well as the playing of the orchestra of the Bavarian State Opera were just incredible. The production was controversial in reviews that I read owing to the modern staging, sets, and costumes. If that bothers you then maybe you should pass on this. I had read that originally Anna Netrebko was to be in this production but canceled owing to artistic differences. I love Netrebko, but her leaving the show seems to have been great luck. Kaufmann and Opolais were simply magical together. The picture quality was great! I have five or six other recordings of this work and without qualification, the singing here is the very best!!!
