DVD 10145 THE TALES OF HOFFMANN (Offenbach)

The picture was not the best, grainy, but the production, the cast and singing was great. I disagree with anyone who claims the singing was poor! Marcelo Alvarez as Hoffman was excellent. Desiree Rancatore was Olymbia, also excellent. Michel Pertusi played all the villains very well. Angela Gheorghiu was Antonia, a little over the top but still excellent. I don't know the names of the singers who played Guiliett and Nickluas, but hey were also great. Bonus English subtitles.

too much acting, too little singing. The glorious music and melodies should be more important

Excellent production and cast. Sound is good but the video is only fair. Since this is the only record of this performance that I could find, it's worth watching.
