AE- 215 RUSSIAN OPERA FROM BULGARIA

Description Provided by Mike Richter It is tempting to illustrate this new disc with the fine recordings of operas, well and little known, ranging from Boris Godunov and Kna Igor through Betrothal in a Monastery, Boyarinya Vera Sheloga and Mavra. An alternative was to offer selections by such great Bulgarian singers as Ghena Dimitrova, Stevka Evstatieva, Nicolai Ghiaurov, Nicola Ghiuselev, Stoyan Popov and Dimiter Uzunov. But instead this page is devoted to a virtually unknown opera by a little-known composer with singers and conductor (Valentin Kozhin) who will be new to you.
Andrey Petrov's "Peter I" was his first opera, premiering at the Kirov in 1975. I've been unable to find any selections available until now, but from the evidence of this recording, I would like to hear all his work. I hope you agree.
Lest there be any misunderstanding; most of the recordings on AE 215 "Russian Opera from Bulgaria" are offered in monaural, though many were recorded by Bulgarian National Radio in stereo. We did choose to use stereo for Peter I because it needs full sound quality for appreciation and because you won't have a better-sounding version in your library.
