A GREAT PARK-CONCERT BOHEME!
menicuzzettu@earthlink.net (Park Ridge, IL) 1/27/2013 10:46 AM
Thankfully, in 1973 and 1974, the boroughs of the City of New York worked to help the Metropolitan Opera to fund the summer parks concerts, so that we have preserved such performances as this one. And this performance is very, very, very good - well-sung by all the members of the cast and by the chorus, well-conducted and well-played, and (a few glitches with the sound system at the park aside) in remarkably present sound (of course, this is taken from a WNYC radio broadcast). And the broadcast commentary is preserved, too! One would never know that Dorothy Kirsten was almost 64 when she sang this Mimi; her voice is fresh and free (aside from a momentary problem with the high C at the end of Act I), and she is still a vocally stunning Mimi. Barry Morell sings equally well as Rodolfo; great pairing for vocal weight of him and Kirsten. Cornell MacNeil sang his only Met Marcellos at these park concerts, and he's GREAT in the role. Maralin Niska does a great job as Musetta, in a performance of BOHEME which is light years better than the disaster broadcast the previous February ("disaster" because of the poor singing of Caballe and Corelli). John Macurdy as Colline and Russell Christopher as Schaunard round out the "Bohemians" in the cast quite well. As with every performance I've heard him conduct, Jan Behr does a solid, professional, and quite good job of conducting. This LA BOHEME is well worth your time and effort. Spend the money on it; you'll be very glad that you did!!!!!
