This German-language production (by Jean-Pierre Ponnelle) was the only time Anja Silja sang Carmen, and thrilling it is! The great singing-actress captures the essence of the fatal anti-heroine. Her colleagues include Josef Hopferwieser (who was to record Alwa two years later, in the Silja/Dohnanyi "Lulu"), Walter Koeniger, and Ellen Shade. All are excellent, under the baton of Christoph von Dohnanyi.
