I was privileged to be at this performance(a Concert Performance)I had only heard Tucker on record,and had never seen him before,I wondered how man in his 60s would cope with this great role.Parts of it were almost like a religious experience,he sang magnificently,with passion,and overcame every hurdle thrown at him by Halevy with golden tone,and very little(if any)strain.Hayashi was a soprano new to me(I later saw her at Covent Graden as Donna Anna)and while being no Ponselle or Rethberg(interpreters of Rachel from a past time)she sang very well,the rest of the cast were also excellent.A FANTASTIC night at the Opera.
