13455-2 RIGOLETTO (Verdi)

Beverly Sills only sang "Rigoletto" on-stage in one production, the Opera Company of Boston's 1977 staging of the Verdi classic, conducted and directed by Sarah Caldwell. (It replaced an announced production of "La sonnambula," which would have been a rôle début for the soprano.) Susanne Marsee was the definitive Maddalena, with Richard Fredricks, Joseph Evans, and James Johnson as co-stars. In the smaller rôles, Alan Crofoot and Jan Curtis portrayed the Count and Countess Ceprano. The production was particularly notable in that Miss Caldwell had found a little aria for Maddalena, marvelously performed here by Miss Marsee. It is a fantastic performance!
